What CASA Volunteers Do
At CASA of the Northern Judicial Circuit, our Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers are dedicated individuals who speak up for the best interests of abused and neglected children. These volunteers undergo comprehensive training, are sworn in by a judge, and are assigned to children involved in local family court cases. Supported by experienced staff, CASA volunteers play a critical role in advocating for the safety, well-being, and future of each child.
Building Connections and Understanding Needs
CASA volunteers form meaningful connections with the children they support, taking the time to understand their interests, challenges, and unique circumstances. They speak with adults in the children's lives — parents, foster families, teachers, counselors, and medical professionals — and review records to gain a thorough understanding of each child’s situation. This holistic perspective allows them to make informed recommendations that prioritize the child’s best interests.
Supporting Judges with Key Insights
Before each court hearing, CASA volunteers compile their findings into a detailed report, including recommendations that help judges make decisions in the child’s best interest. By providing this critical information, CASA volunteers not only advocate for the child’s immediate needs but also work to shorten the duration of cases and help children find safe, loving, and permanent homes as quickly as possible.

They build trust, play games, listen to concerns, and encourage children to express themselves. For children who may lack stability, a CASA volunteer becomes a trusted adult, providing the unwavering support they need.
Life-Changing Advocacy
The work of CASA volunteers can have a profound impact on a child’s future. From ensuring medical needs are addressed to uncovering hidden challenges like undiagnosed vision issues, CASA volunteers help children overcome obstacles and thrive. Studies show that children with CASA advocates are less likely to re-enter foster care, receive more services, graduate high school, and experience fewer disruptions during their cases.
Commitment to Advocacy
Becoming a CASA volunteer is a rewarding journey that requires dedication and compassion.
Training and Education
New volunteers complete a 30-hour training program that prepares them for the complexities of the role. Once sworn in, volunteers typically dedicate 5-10 hours a month to their cases, making this a meaningful opportunity for professionals, students, and retirees alike.
Part of training is also 10 hours of courtroom observation. This is valuable to help volunteers understand court protocol and learn more about the Justice System.
CASA volunteers also complete 12 hours of continuing education annually, ensuring they stay informed about best practices and the challenges faced by the children they serve.

Though the work requires commitment, the rewards are immeasurable. CASA volunteers directly contribute to changing the trajectory of a child’s life, providing stability and hope during difficult times.
